Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity NRA, with its mountainous back country and large reservoirs, offers many summer activities such as hiking and boating, as well as historical remains of the California Gold Rush of 1849. Shasta Lake is the largest man-made reservoir in California, and along with Trinity Lake and Whiskeytown Lake, offers excellent opportunities for water sports, including swimming, scuba diving, water skiing, boating and fishing.
Whiskeytown Lake was created by diverting water from the Trinity River Basin to the Sacramento River Basin. The most prominent landmark within the Recreation Area is Shasta Bally (elevation 6,209 feet). The summit may be reached on foot and by 4-wheel drive vehicle, but is closed in the winter. Picnicking, hiking, hunting, interpretive programs and horseback riding are also popular. This is a good eagle and osprey watching area. |

From Redding, go north on I-5. To reach Whiskeytown Lake, take the 299 West exit toward Eureka. Follow 299 west for approximately 8 miles. To reach the Shasta-Trinity Unit, continue north on I-5.
